Agent: Grant Hill will sign with Suns

By Paul Coro, The Arizona Republic

Grant Hill will be a Sun.

Hill's agent, Lon Babby, told The Arizona Republic that Hill notified Phoenix on Thursday that he would join the Suns in his

quest for a championship. There is a moratorium on free-agent signings until Wednesday.

Hill was offered the Suns' biennial exception, which will pay him $1.83 million in the coming season and give him a player

option to return at $1.97 million for 2008-09. Coming off a seven-year, $92 million contract with Orlando, money was not his

biggest lure to Phoenix.

"He established a number of criteria," Babby said. "His opportunity to contribute to a championship would be on the top of

the list. He really thought it through and was diligent and concluded this is the best opportunity for his career. He's

very,very excited about it."

Hill was drawn by the chance to be on a title contender and have an important playing role on a team that fits the 6-8

swingman's versatile style. Hill, who will turn 35 in October, could start for Phoenix with Steve Nash, Raja Bell, Shawn

Marion and Amare Stoudemire.

He also will give Suns coach Mike D'Antoni another facilitator to help run the offense when Nash is resting.

"The opportunity described to him is consistent with what he's looking for," Babby said. "He's not someone looking for

anything granted to him, but more that he'd have the opportunity to start."

Hill chose Phoenix over Detroit, Orlando, San Antonio, Miami and Dallas. Hill heard phone pitches from each team this week,

talking to D'Antoni and Suns general manager Steve Kerr on Tuesday. He also spoke to Nash at some point, Babby said.

Hill is coming off one of his healthiest seasons after an Orlando tenure plagued by injuries. He has undergone five

surgeries on his left ankle, including one that led to a life-threatening staph infection.

He also underwent hernia surgery in the fall of 2005.

Hill bounced back last season, just as he did to make the 2005 NBA All-Star Game after rebounding from a four-year battle

with ankle injuries that caused him to miss all but 47 of 328 games. Last season, Hill played in 65 games and finished a

season in uniform, rather than a suit or a hospital, for the first time in Orlando.

"His health is fine," Babby said. "There is every expectation that he will be healthy."

Hill averaged 14.4 points last season on 51.8% shooting and played 30.9 minutes per game. When he has played, Hill has shot

49% or better in the past four seasons, but he does not have three-point range. Once one of the league's best rebounding

swingmen, Hill averaged a career-low 3.6 rebounds last season.

Red Sox send Devil Rays to 10th loss in a row

NEW YORK (Reuters) - The Boston Red Sox beat Tampa Bay 7-5 on Wednesday at Fenway Park to hand the slumping

Devil Rays their 10th successive loss.

The Red Sox built a 7-1 lead after five innings behind Tim Wakefield's pitching and withstood a late Tampa Bay rally to

maintain their 11 ˝ game lead in the American League East over the Toronto Blue Jays.

The Rays slipped to 33-50, the worst record in the AL.

Devil Rays manager Joe Maddon put on a brave face when talking to reporters after the game.

"Our guys have been trying so darn hard and you can almost see them grinding away between the ears," Maddon said.

"The effort has been great. Everything's been good, we just haven't been winning. If we take this and learn some

lessons from this, it's going to help us a long time up the road."

The Red Sox scored three runs in the fourth and another three in the fifth off Tampa Bay starter Edwin Jackson (1-9),

who was charged with all seven Boston runs and nine hits in five innings.

Wakefield (9-8) tired in the seventh and was charged with four runs on seven hits over 6 1/3 innings, striking out two and

walking two.

Three relievers finished up including Jonathan Papelbon, who tossed a scoreless ninth for his 20th save of the season.

*Johan Santana recorded his 10th win of the season, lifting the Minnesota Twins to a 6-2 win over the New York Yankees.

*The Toronto Blue Jays wrapped up their 10-game road trip with a 10-3 rout of the Oakland Athletics.

*The Detroit Tigers moved to within two games of the first place Cleveland Indians in

the AL Central with a 6-4 win over the Tribe at Detroit.

Totti comeback

AS Roma striker Francesco Totti hailed his own remarkable comeback from injury after winning the Golden Boot award for finishing the season

as Europe's top striker. The 30-year-old scored 26 goals in Serie A this season despite playing the whole of this season with a metal pin in his ankle

the result of an injury that threatened to keep him out of Italy's World Cup-winning campaign in Germany last year.

Kobe Bryant

has not appeared on radio or television in three weeks. He is not even in the United States. But in the lull between a less-than-compelling N.B.A. finals

and an intriguing draft, Bryant is again commandeering headlines, and the league’s attention, without saying a word.In a video reportedly taken in May,

Kobe Bryant was profane in criticizing Lakers management. Kobe Bryant during game five of the 2007 Western Conference Quarterfinals.

First came a report that Bryant had publicly restated his trade request. Then came word of an amateur video in which Bryant profanely expressed his

frustration with the Los Angeles Lakers. The report proved to be inaccurate. The video, which could become public by the end of the week,

could be damaging. Bryant issued a public trade request May 30, in a series of radio interviews. That same day, he amplified his feelings in a posting on

his Web site, KB24.com, writing that “the Lakers and me just have two different visions for the future.” That message was reposted Sunday, under a heading

“June 17,” creating the impression that it was a new item. Bryant’s recycled comments became an Associated Press article, which made it instant national

news. The item ran yesterday in The New York Times and was a top headline on ESPN.com.

It was unclear if Bryant’s comments were reposted to ratchet up pressure on the Lakers. Bryant is traveling in Europe with his family.

Messages left with the Web site’s operators and Bryant’s agent, Rob Pelinka, were not returned. By yesterday afternoon, the error had been discovered,

and the story quickly changed. ESPN.com removed the article from its Web site. And KB24.com removed the statement.

In its place were quotes, said to be from Bryant’s fans, expressing support for his trade request.

The next words heard from Bryant will also be several weeks old, and to many of his devoted admirers, perhaps shocking. An amateur video, said to have been

taken in late May, shows Bryant viciously criticizing the team’s management and the franchise’s best young prospect, the 19-year-old center Andrew Bynum.
